Grand Canyon Day Trip from Phoenix: Which One, and How Long?

Grand Canyon Day Trip from Phoenix: Which One, and How Long?

A Grand Canyon day from Phoenix is a long day by definition. The South Rim is a full-day round trip from the Valley, and every Grand Canyon land tour here runs 12 to 15 hours except the Flagstaff add-on. The useful question is not whether the day is long. It is whether you want a group van, a private vehicle, or a helicopter added to the same day.

We run four land options to the South Rim. They differ in group size, whether Sedona is included, and whether you add a flight. Here is the honest comparison, with the durations and prices from the current tour pages.

The four land options at a glance

  • Grand Canyon & Sedona group day - 13 hours, $194 adult / $120 child, park entry included.
  • Private South Rim day - 12 to 13 hours, $1,150 to $2,050 per vehicle for 1 to 13 guests.
  • Private South Rim day with helicopter - 12 to 13 hours, $1,250 for 1 to 5 guests plus $329 per person for the flight, or $2,050 for 6 to 13 without the flight.
  • Grand Canyon Highlights from Flagstaff - 7 to 8 hours, $175 adult / $110 child, only if you are already in Flagstaff.

The group day: the value option

The Grand Canyon & Sedona Day Tour is the simplest way to see the canyon from the Valley. It runs 13 hours, picks up from select Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe hotels, and returns around 7 to 8 PM. You get about three hours in the park: the South Rim overlooks, El Tovar, Hopi House and Bright Angel, plus a photo stop at Bell Rock in Sedona on the way home. National Park entrance fees are included, and the child rate covers ages 3 to 12. It is the best value for a first visit and the easiest day to book for a family.

One fee surprises international guests: in 2026 the National Park Service charges a $100 per-person fee for non-US visitors aged 16 and older on commercial park tours, collected by park staff. It is not part of the tour price.

The private day: your pace, your stops

The Private Grand Canyon South Rim Tour is priced per vehicle, not per person: $1,150 for 1 to 3 guests, $1,250 for 4 to 5, $1,750 for 6 to 10, and $2,050 for 11 to 13. A naturalist guide picks you up door-to-door around 6 to 7 AM and returns in the evening. The stops are Mather Point, Yavapai, Bright Angel and El Tovar, and the pace is yours. For a group of four to six, the per-person cost can land close to the group tour while giving you your own vehicle and schedule. It is also the better fit for very young children, since the private tour accepts all ages.

Adding the helicopter

The Private South Rim Helicopter Tour keeps the same 12 to 13 hour day and adds a 45-minute flight over the Dragon Corridor, the widest and deepest section of the canyon. The charter is $1,250 for 1 to 5 guests and the flight is $329 per person; for 6 to 13 guests the vehicle is $2,050 and the flight is priced separately. Passenger weights are required at booking, and guests over 300 pounds need an extra seat. If this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, the flight is the part people remember.

If you are already in Flagstaff

The Guided Grand Canyon Highlights Tour is 7 to 8 hours from Flagstaff, with pickup around 8:30 to 9 AM and a return around 4:30 to 5:30 PM. It includes park entry but not lunch. It is a good canyon day if you are staying north; it is not a Phoenix day trip.

The other scenic days

Sedona, group or private. The Sedona Day Tour runs 10 to 11 hours for $159 adult / $95 child, with Montezuma Castle, Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, the Chapel of the Holy Cross and time in Uptown and Tlaquepaque. The Private Sedona Day Tour runs 8 to 11 hours from $975 per vehicle and can add a guided hike for $135 per person with a two-guest minimum.

Antelope Canyon. The Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend Tour is the longest day on the list at 14 to 15 hours and $420 per person. It includes the Navajo permit, a Lower Antelope Canyon entry, the 1.5-mile walk to Horseshoe Bend, and lunch in Page. Bags are not allowed in the canyon.

Apache Trail. The Apache Trail & Dolly Steamboat Day Tour is the shortest scenic day at 8 to 9 hours, $145 adult through mid-January and $169 after, with a $95 child rate. It combines Goldfield Ghost Town, a 90-minute Dolly Steamboat cruise on Canyon Lake, and Tortilla Flat.

If you would rather fly

Flying changes the shape of the day, not just the transport. Two existing guides compare the air and road options directly: Sky vs. Highway and Flying vs. Driving from Scottsdale. Read those before you decide to spend the day in a vehicle.

Questions people ask

Is 13 hours too long? It is a full day. The group tour returns around 7 to 8 PM; the private tour starts earlier and moves at your pace. If you want a shorter day, choose Sedona or the Apache Trail.

Can young children come? The group canyon tour accepts ages 3 and up. The private canyon tours accept all ages.

Does the price include park entry? The group canyon tour includes it. The private tours are priced per vehicle, and the $100 non-resident fee applies separately to international visitors 16 and older.

Can we add Sedona to the canyon day? The group tour includes a Bell Rock photo stop, not a full Sedona visit. Sedona is its own day tour.

Is the helicopter worth it? It adds 45 minutes over the deepest section of the canyon and $329 per person to a private charter. If you are making the trip once, it is the upgrade with the biggest payoff.
