Tour Itinerary

Your journey begins with a comfortable pickup in our high-roof touring vans, designed for maximum visibility and climate-controlled comfort. We head east along the Apache Trail, Arizona’s first designated Historic Highway and scenic byway. The original route was a footpath used by the local Apache Tribe through the Superstition Mountains, and it still delivers some of the best Sonoran Desert scenery in the state.

Our first stop is Goldfield Ghost Town, incorporated in 1892 during a local gold rush. For five years it was a miner’s paradise; when the vein dried up, Goldfield became a classic ghost town. Today you can explore restored historic buildings, try your hand at gold panning, marvel at original mining gear, and even visit Lu Lu’s Bordello if you dare.

As we wind deeper into the desert, the road reveals the sheer scale of the Fish Creek Hill area. We’ll pull into Tortilla Flat, a stagecoach stop since 1904 that survived fire, drought, and bandits. With a population of six, it still holds onto its Old West tradition through its architecture and famous dollar-bill-lined walls. Cool off with a cold beverage at the saloon or grab some prickly pear gelato before the landscape transitions from saguaro-studded hills to the deep blue of Canyon Lake.

Along the way, keep an eye out for the legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine. Rumored to be the richest gold vein in the West, its secret location was buried with German immigrant Jacob Waltz. If you have the “golden eye,” maybe you’ll spot it.

The centerpiece of the afternoon is the Dolly Steamboat. On this 90-minute narrated nature cruise you’ll glide through secluded coves surrounded by 1,300-foot volcanic canyon walls. Keep your camera ready for bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and other desert wildlife. A snack bar on board offers water, sodas, snacks, and alcohol, but it is cash only.

Temporary Tour Update: From September 2026 through mid-January 2027, the Dolly Steamboat cruise will be unavailable due to scheduled Canyon Lake dam maintenance. During this time, the tour will include a visit to the Superstition Mountain Museum, which explores the legends, mining history, and Western heritage of the region through indoor exhibits, outdoor displays, a working 20-stamp gold mill, Western storefronts, a nature trail, and two surviving structures from the historic Apacheland Movie Ranch: the Apacheland Barn and the Elvis Chapel.

We finish the day with a smooth ride back to the Valley, leaving the dust and the legends of the trail behind us.

• Minimum Age: 3+ years old.
• Physicality: Low-impact; involves casual walking on boardwalks and gravel.
• Gear: Sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

Season & Departure Times

Public tours depart every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, year-round; a minimum number of participants is required. Expect a morning pickup between 8:00am and 9:00am (from May through August, departure may be up to one hour earlier), returning you to your hotel by late afternoon (approx. 4:00pm–5:00pm). Pickups are from select hotels in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe; in some cases you may be asked to meet at another nearby hotel, and our office will contact you upon booking.

Important Notes

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: Bring cash for the Dolly Steamboat snack bar if you want a mid-cruise treat (water, sodas, snacks, and alcohol are available; cash only). Meals are not included, so feel free to pack a snack or enjoy the local fare at our stops. Tour minimum is 6 guests; we may combine parties to meet this minimum.
