What is the Hidden Valley & Fat Man's Pass Guided Hike?
This is a premier guided Sonoran Desert hiking experience located within South Mountain Park and Preserve. Led by a professional, safety-certified guide, the hike follows the Mormon Trail up ancient granite switchbacks to the secluded slickrock landscape of Hidden Valley, exploring natural stone arches, ancient Hohokam petroglyphs, and the famous narrow cleft of Fat Man's Pass while enjoying panoramic views of the Phoenix Valley.

How long is the hike?
The tour covers approximately 3 miles round-trip with a total duration of approximately 3–4 hours.

How difficult is the trail?
The hike is rated moderate to strenuous. It involves steady elevation gain over rocky steps, uneven granite switchbacks, and natural slickrock slabs. A baseline level of physical agility and cardiovascular stamina is recommended.

ARCHAEOLOGY & TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS

Will we see ancient Native American petroglyphs?
Yes. South Mountain is rich in indigenous archaeology. Along the trail, your guide will point out ancient Hohokam petroglyphs etched centuries ago into the dark desert varnish of the granite boulders, explaining their cultural and historical significance.

What is Fat Man's Pass?
Fat Man's Pass is a famous natural rock formation where two massive granite boulders sit roughly one foot apart, requiring hikers to slide through sideways. It is a favorite photo opportunity on the route. (An easy trail bypass is available for anyone who prefers not to squeeze through.)
