For the shortest approach, the Devil's Bridge Trailhead trims the hike to 1.6 miles round-trip, but it requires a high-clearance vehicle and isn't recommended in wet weather. Your exact meeting location is confirmed before the tour.
From there, the route winds through a high-desert paradise of agave, juniper and towering red peaks. The approach is relatively level - scenic single-track with plenty of time to settle into the rhythm of the desert while your guide shares the ancient geology that carved the landscape. Then comes the finale: a short, moderate climb up a natural rock staircase to the viewing area, and the bridge reveal.
What the Hike Actually Feels Like
This one is rated moderate, and it delivers exactly that: mostly manageable trail, finished by the staircase climb and the option to walk the bridge itself. Crossing the span is entirely optional - your guide provides assistance and prioritizes safety, but it's your call. Those who make the walk out get the payoff: a massive sandstone surface underfoot, jaw-dropping canyon vistas in every direction, and the deep blue Arizona sky framing it all.
Plan on three to four hours total, including the hike in, time for photos and exploration at the arch, and the return to the trailhead. Total distance runs 4.0 to 5.8 miles round-trip depending on the route, with about 371 feet of elevation gain.
Who This Hike Is For
Active hikers ages 10 and up who want the iconic Sedona photo without the stress of finding the trail. It's a favorite for photographers, families with older kids, and first-time visitors who want to knock out the big one with a local. Two numbers worth knowing before you book:
- 6 guests maximum - the group cap set by National Forest restrictions, which keeps the experience personal.
- $165 per hiker - with a 2-person minimum required for booking.
One honest caveat: it's a popular trail. Don't be surprised to see people waiting their turn for the bridge photo - it's part of the experience, and your guide knows how to work the timing.
Know Before You Go
A few things that make the day go smoothly:
- Reservations are required. This is one of Sedona's most popular hikes with limited group sizes - book in advance to secure your date.
- It runs year-round. Summer (June-September) departures are at 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM; October through May brings 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM starts.
- Parking is extremely limited. On Thursdays through Sundays, take the free Sedona Shuttle (Route 11) from the West SR-89A Park & Ride. Red Rock Passes for trailhead parking are not included in the tour price.
- Bring your own supplies. 25 to 32 ounces of water per person, snacks, and a daypack - filtered water refills are available at the meeting point.
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Hiking boots or athletic shoes with good traction for the rocky trail and stone staircase.
