Standing Up on the Salt River: A Guide's Take on the SUP & Wildlife Tour

A River You Can Stand On
Most people see the Lower Salt River from a raft or a kayak - low to the water, moving with the current. But there's a way to take it in from a full standing view: a stand-up paddleboard. It's the difference between watching the desert go by and standing tall inside it.
That's our Salt River Stand-Up Paddle Boarding & Wildlife Tour - an advanced-level guided paddle through one of the most scenic desert corridors near Phoenix, with wild horses and bald eagles along the banks.
The Paddle
This is 1.5–2 hours on the water, within a 2–2.5 hour window from meet time to finish. You'll meet your guide at the Canal/Hawes Park & Ride, shuttle to the launch, and get a moving-water safety briefing plus paddling instruction before your feet ever touch a board.
Then the river takes over: a gentle but consistent current carries the group downstream through scenic desert corridors, and your guide reads the flow ahead, pointing out the best lines through the water. You paddle as much or as little as you like - the current does the rest.
The Wildlife Along the Banks
The Lower Salt River is a true desert oasis, and the wildlife knows it. Resident wild horse herds are often seen cooling off in the water, bald eagles work the riverbanks, and river birds are constant along the corridor.
Sightings are never guaranteed - these animals are in their natural habitat - but standing quiet and tall on a board is one of the better ways to watch them without disturbing a thing.
Moving Water, Earned Views
Let's be clear about the level: this tour is for experienced paddlers only. The water moves, the board is responsive, and you need to be comfortable on both. In return you get a full-body workout and a perspective on the desert that most people never earn - lush riverbanks and rugged cliffs sliding past at paddle height.
Your guide brings river skills and local natural history to the trip, so the scenery comes with a story attached.
What's Handled for You
Everything on the water is taken care of: a professional safety-certified guide, high-performance paddleboards suited for river conditions, paddles, PFDs, and dry storage for your essentials. Snacks and bottled water are included, National Forest entry fees are covered, and the roundtrip shuttle between the meeting point and the river means you never worry about the logistics.
Guide Tips for the Day
- Footwear matters: water shoes or sport sandals with a backstrap are required — no flip-flops or bare feet.
- Dress quick-dry: comfortable athletic clothing you don't mind getting wet, plus a change of clothing.
- Respect the sun: hat, sunglasses, and SPF 30+ sunscreen — it reflects right off the water.
- Hydrate early: drink water before you arrive; bottled water is provided on tour.
- Bring a camera: waterproof is best; a waterproof case works for phones.
- Plan around the timeframe: tours run daily with prior reservation, with a morning timeframe of 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
Who Is This Tour For?
Experienced paddlers ages 12 and up who weigh at least 90 lbs and are comfortable on moving water. If you'd rather float than stand, the river is still yours - check the rafting and kayaking options instead.
