The vehicle doesn't change for the sunset run - and it doesn't need to. The H1 Hummer is the closest a civilian can get to the military-grade M998 Humvee, and it treats mud, dirt, rock, and water exactly the same:
- Climbs a 22-inch vertical wall without losing momentum.
- Scales 60-degree slopes and traverses 40-degree side slopes.
- Fords 30 inches of water - a 2.5-foot river crossing, done dry.
- 16 inches of ground clearance over rock and rut.
Up to 12 guests ride high above the ground, with a professional guide handling the wheel while the group focuses on the sky.
Golden Hour on the Trail
Your guide picks you up from your Phoenix or Scottsdale hotel in the late afternoon, and the ride out follows the saguaro-lined trails into the Tonto National Forest as the light starts to stretch. The route pushes toward the base of Four Peaks, gaining elevation as the sun drops toward the horizon.
The signature moment comes at a scenic overlook: the engine goes quiet, everyone steps out, and the desert glow shifts from gold to amber to rose while your guide points out the ridgelines and landmarks around you. Then it's nearly 20 miles of breathtaking desert vistas back down - including a 2.5-foot river crossing when conditions allow - with the Superstition Mountains silhouetted against the fading sky. You're back at your resort after dark, with the desert still in your head.
Timing & Logistics
- Departures: Year-round, timed to sunset - 3:00/3:30 PM from October to February, 5:00/5:30 PM from March to September. Arrive 15 minutes early.
- Duration: About 3 hours total, with roughly 2 hours on trail.
- Price: $195 per person. Groups of 8+ incur a 15% gratuity, and all tours are subject to an 8.1% tax and 5% forest beautification surcharge.
- Minimum: 6 guests per sunset time to operate - your party doesn't have to meet it, since we group parties together.
- Riders: Ages 3 and up; car seats required for children 5 and under. Closed-toe shoes and long pants recommended.
- Extras: Hotel/resort pickup in most cases, snacks and bottled water, and free daytime and sunset photos delivered via SmugMug.
One honest note: there are no restrooms at the trailhead, and the ride is bumpy - that's the fun part, but it's not recommended for pregnant guests or anyone with back or neck injuries.
