ABOUT THE TOUR

What is the Tom’s Thumb hike?
It is a guided, small-group desert hike in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve that climbs switchbacks through granite formations and Sonoran Desert terrain to the base of the Tom’s Thumb monolith. At the top, hikers enjoy sweeping views of the Valley of the Sun and Four Peaks before returning via the same route.

How long is the tour?
The full experience runs approximately 3–4 hours from trailhead meet-up to return, including a safety briefing, the hike itself, summit time for photos, and post-hike refreshments.

How far is the hike and how much elevation will we gain?
The route covers roughly 5 miles roundtrip with about 1,236 feet of elevation gain. Most of the climb is front-loaded in the first portion of the trail, so the ascent is steady and continuous.

What level of difficulty should I expect?
The hike is rated moderate to strenuous. Guests should be comfortable with sustained uphill effort, uneven rocky footing, and stair-step sections on switchbacks. A reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness is needed to enjoy it.

What will we see along the way?
Expect classic Sonoran Desert scenery – saguaro, ocotillo, cholla, palo verde, and wildflowers in season – along with massive granite boulders, hoodoos, and the 140 to 200-foot Tom’s Thumb monolith itself. Raptors, lizards, and the occasional desert mammal are commonly spotted.

Is this a private tour?
Yes. Each booking is run as a private guided experience for your party, scaled from a single hiker up to 10 hikers, with pricing tiered accordingly.

What is the price?
Pricing is $220 for a solo hiker, $145 per person for groups of 2–3, and $120 per person for groups of 4–10. Larger parties can be accommodated by special arrangement.

What is included in the tour?
Your tour includes a professional guide certified as a Wilderness First Responder or EMT, bottled water, healthy trail snacks, a lightweight backpack, sunscreen, a first-aid kit, all preserve fees, and refreshments after the hike.

What is not included?
Transportation to and from the trailhead, gratuities for your guide (a 20% tip is customary), and applicable sales tax are not included in the tour price.

Where does the tour meet?
The tour meets at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, 12943 E Paraiso Dr, Scottsdale, AZ. Your guide will call the evening before to confirm the exact meeting spot, parking, and departure time.

REQUIREMENTS

What is the minimum age?
The minimum age for this tour is 8 years old. Younger hikers should be strong, confident walkers comfortable on steep and rocky trails for several hours.

How fit do I need to be?
A good level of general fitness is required. If you can comfortably walk 3–4 miles on varied terrain and handle stairs without issue, you will likely enjoy the hike. The tour is not recommended for guests with significant cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.

Do I need hiking experience?
Previous hiking experience is helpful but not required. First-time desert hikers do well on this trail with a guide, provided they are honest about their fitness and pace themselves early on the climb.

Is the hike safe for guests with bee allergies?
Africanized bees are present throughout the Sonoran Desert. Guests with severe bee or insect allergies must bring their own prescribed medication (such as an EpiPen) and inform the guide before the hike begins.

Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. All guests must complete and sign an Assumption of Risk waiver at least 72 hours prior to the tour. A link is sent with your booking confirmation.

GEAR

What footwear is required?
Closed-toe athletic or hiking shoes with good tread are required. Sandals, flip-flops, and smooth-soled sneakers are not allowed due to loose rock and cactus hazards on the trail.

What should I wear?
Lightweight, moisture-wicking athletic clothing works best. Long-sleeved sun layers, a brimmed hat or cap, and sunglasses are strongly recommended year-round. Desert sun is intense even in cooler months.

How much water should I bring?
Bottled water is provided, but guests should also arrive with 2–3 liters of their own water. There is no drinking water at the trailhead or anywhere along the trail.

Do I need to bring a backpack?
A lightweight daypack is provided if you need one. You are welcome to bring your own if you prefer to carry personal items, camera gear, or additional water.

Should I bring food?
Healthy trail snacks are provided. Guests are welcome to bring additional snacks or an energy bar if they prefer specific foods or have dietary needs.

Can I bring trekking poles?
Yes. Trekking poles are optional but can be helpful on the descent, especially for guests with knee concerns. Let your guide know in advance if you would like poles arranged.

SEASON

When is the best time of year to hike Tom’s Thumb?
October through April offers the most comfortable temperatures and the best wildflower potential in spring. Summer hikes are possible but require very early starts and extra caution due to heat.

What are the departure times?
November through April departures are at 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 1:00 PM. May through October departures are at 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, and 10:00 AM to beat the heat.

How hot does it get on the trail?
Summer trail temperatures can exceed 100°F, with exposed rock radiating additional heat. Winter days are typically 55–75°F and very pleasant for hiking.

What wildlife might we see?
Visitors should expect to see lizards, ground squirrels, rabbits, and a variety of birds including hawks and hummingbirds. Rattlesnakes are present in warmer months and are easily avoided by staying on the trail and watching where you step and reach.

Is there cell service on the trail?
Cell service is intermittent throughout the preserve and can drop entirely in canyon sections. Guests should not rely on their phone for navigation or emergency communication – that is your guide’s job.

Are there restrooms?
Visitors will find vault-style restrooms at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead parking area. There are no restroom facilities anywhere along the trail itself.

RESERVATIONS

How do I book the tour?
Reservations are made online through the booking link at the bottom of this page, or by contacting 360 Adventures directly to arrange a custom date and time.

How does payment work?
Your card is pre-authorized at the time of booking. Payment is only processed after we manually confirm the date, time, and itinerary fit your party – so you are never charged for a tour that turns out to be a poor match.

How far in advance should I book?
Booking at least one to two weeks ahead is recommended during the peak October–April season. Last-minute requests are accommodated when guide availability allows.

Can I request a specific departure time?
Yes. Select from the published seasonal departure windows at booking, or request a custom time – we will confirm whether a guide is available.

Is transportation to the trailhead available?
Standard tour pricing does not include transportation. Guests typically self-drive to the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, and rideshare drop-off works well. Transportation can sometimes be arranged on request for an additional fee.

CANCELLATION

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure receive a full refund. Inside the 72-hour window, the tour is non-refundable because the guide and preserve logistics are already committed.

What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions such as lightning, extreme heat, or heavy rain make the trail unsafe, we will reschedule your tour or issue a full refund. Light rain or cool temperatures typically do not cancel a hike.

Can I reschedule instead of cancel?
Yes. Rescheduling is encouraged and is usually possible at no extra cost, subject to guide and seasonal availability.

What if a member of my party cannot make it?
Per-person pricing is tier-based, so removing a hiker may shift the remaining group into a different price tier. Contact us as early as possible so we can adjust your booking fairly.
