What is the Grand Canyon Helicopter & Hiking Tour?
This is an exclusive combination adventure: a private helicopter flight from Scottsdale Airpark to the Grand Canyon South Rim, followed by a customized guided hike below the rim led by a medically certified interpretive guide. The total experience lasts approximately 8 hours, with up to 4 full hours of dedicated ground time inside Grand Canyon National Park.
What will we see during the flight?
The low-level flight soars above the rugged Sonoran Desert, the dramatic red rock ridges of the Verde Valley, and the towering pine forests of the Mogollon Rim, delivering panoramic front-row aerial perspectives of northern Arizona before touching down directly at the Grand Canyon South Rim airport.
Is the hike guided?
Yes. A medically certified, professional interpretive hiking guide greets you planeside at the South Rim airfield, handles all gear, escorts you via private ground transport past park gates directly to the trailhead, leads the hike, and escorts you back for your return flight.
THE HIKING EXPERIENCE
How long is the hike below the rim?
The customized guided hike features 1 to 3 hours of backcountry trail time below the rim. You enjoy up to 4 full hours of dedicated ground time inside the park, and any time not spent descending trails is seamlessly transitioned into an interpretive South Rim viewpoint tour.
How physically demanding is the hike?
This is a physically demanding backcountry excursion. Guests must be in good physical health and capable of hiking 1 to 3 hours on steep, uneven, rocky, and unpaved canyon trails, and of ascending back to the rim at approximately 7,000 feet of elevation. Guests must also be able to step into and out of aircraft and transport vehicles unaided by guides.
What if our group wants a shorter hike or an easier day?
Your guide customizes the day entirely to your fitness and comfort level. Any ground time not spent hiking down into the canyon is converted into a guided rim tour with paved lookout walks and panoramic historic viewpoints.
REQUIREMENTS
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age is 12 years old, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Are there weight limits for the helicopter?
Yes. There is a combined maximum weight limit of 850 lbs for all passengers. Guests are weighed at check-in, and the pilot assigns seating to ensure proper aircraft weight and balance.
Does the Non-US Citizen National Park surcharge apply?
Starting January 1, 2026, a $100 per person Non-US Citizen/Resident National Park Entry Fee Surcharge applies for guests ages 16 and older unless they have purchased an America the Beautiful Non-Resident Annual Pass.

What is the aircraft stand-by fee?
All reservations include a required pilot and aircraft stand-by fee of $780 ($195/hour x 4 hours), ensuring your dedicated helicopter and pilot remain on-site at the South Rim airfield throughout your ground excursion so your return flight departs precisely on schedule.
Is lunch provided?
Yes. A gourmet picnic-style lunch is served on the trail, with bottled spring water, electrolyte beverages, and trail snacks throughout the day. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are gladly accommodated when requested at booking.
What’s not included?
Pilot and hiking guide gratuities, personal gear, souvenirs, discretionary park purchases, and the Non-US Citizen/Resident National Park Entry Fee Surcharge where applicable.
GEAR & WHAT TO BRING
What footwear is required?
Broken-in hiking boots or trail running shoes with aggressive lugged tread are mandatory. Smooth-soled fashion sneakers, sandals, and open-toe shoes are strictly prohibited on trail descents.
What should I wear?
Moisture-wicking technical base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a wind/rain shell. South Rim conditions differ sharply from the Phoenix valley, so check the Grand Canyon weather forecast prior to departure.
What should I bring?
Polarized sunglasses, a wide-brim hat or cap, broad-spectrum sunscreen, a government-issued photo ID (mandatory for flight manifest check-in and park entry), and a small camera or fully charged smartphone.
SEASON & DEPARTURES
When does the tour operate?
Tours operate year-round. Typical departure times are 7:00 AM during warmer months (May through September) to maximize cooler morning trail temperatures, and between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM from October through April. Schedule flexibility may be accommodated upon request.
Where does the tour depart from?
All flights depart from Scottsdale Airpark (Scottsdale Airport).
Is the flight affected by weather?
Yes. Helicopter flights are weather-dependent and subject to pilot discretion regarding wind and visibility.
BOOKING & POLICIES
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Advance booking is mandatory to secure pilot and guide availability. In the special request box at booking, please provide each passenger’s full name and weight.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made at least 6 days prior to the scheduled departure date are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made within 6 days of departure are non-refundable.
