Sonoran Desert Singletrack: The Rider's Guide to Mountain Biking in Scottsdale

Sonoran Desert Singletrack: The Rider's Guide to Mountain Biking in Scottsdale

North Scottsdale's Desert Playground

North Scottsdale is where the Sonoran Desert shows off. In the McDowell Sonoran Preserve area, tens of thousands of acres of protected desert wilderness rise at the city's edge, laced with smooth, rolling singletrack that winds between giant saguaros, ocotillo, and cholla. For mountain bikers, it is the classic Scottsdale ride: flowing desert trails, wide-open skies, and scenery you can't fake.

Whether you're clipping in for the first time or looking to put in desert miles, the trails around North Scottsdale deliver. And with a guided ride, every mile comes with the bike, gear, hydration, and local knowledge handled.

Why Scottsdale is a Must-Ride for Desert Mountain Biking

Scottsdale's trail network spans the full ability spectrum, which is exactly why guided rides here work so well for first-timers and mixed groups:

  • Smooth rolling singletrack: Beginner-friendly hardpack trails that let new riders focus on handling and confidence.
  • Customizable routes: Your guide tailors the day's loops to your group's ability, goals, and comfort level - from easy scenic spins to punchier terrain for advanced riders.
  • Classic Sonoran scenery: Giant saguaros, ocotillo, and rugged mountain backdrops framing every section of trail.
  • Rider-friendly climate: Cool, sunny riding for most of the year, with early summer starts to beat the heat.

The result is a ride that feels built for you, because it is. Our guided Scottsdale mountain bike tour stages from a Scottsdale-area trailhead and shapes the route around your group, so beginners and seasoned riders alike roll out with a smile.

The Terrain: Flowing Trails Through the Sonoran Desert

North Scottsdale singletrack is famous for being friendly without being boring. Expect:

Smooth, Rolling Hardpack

Much of the riding is on well-maintained hardpack that rewards a steady rhythm. It's the ideal surface for building skills - smooth enough to stay relaxed, varied enough to keep you engaged.

Saguaro-Lined Corridors

Sections of trail tunnel through forests of giant saguaro - the iconic cactus of the Sonoran Desert - with ocotillo and cholla filling in the gaps. It's the most photogenic riding in the Valley.

Open Desert Vistas

The trail opens regularly to wide desert panoramas with rugged mountain backdrops. Guides pause at the best viewpoints for photos, water, and a quick read of the landscape, ecology, and trail system.

An All-Inclusive Guided Experience

Show up ready to ride - everything else is handled:

  • Fitted front-suspension hardtail mountain bike, helmet, and gloves.
  • Full-suspension upgrades for riders who want more capability: performance builds for $25 and high-performance carbon builds for $60.
  • Bottled water and trail snacks - no need to carry your own.
  • Professional safety-certified guide handling route selection, technique tips, and desert interpretation.
  • Insurance, permits, and entry fees covered.
