Just You and the Desert: A Guide's Take on the Sonoran Desert Solo ATV Tour
There's a moment, about ten minutes into this tour, when it clicks. The group has strung out along the trail, the dust is settling behind you, and it's just you, the throttle, and a hundred thousand square miles of Sonoran Desert. No passenger to talk over, no one else touching the controls. On the Solo ATV Tour, every rider gets that moment - because every rider gets their own machine.
Why Go Solo?
Most of our off-road tours are built around sharing: couples in a 2-seat UTV, families piled into a 4-seater, pairs trading driving duties in a dune buggy. All great - but they all involve compromise. Somebody drives, somebody rides along.
This tour removes the compromise. Every guest drives a fully automatic, single-rider ATV for the entire two hours. No passengers, no sharing the wheel, no waiting for a turn. If your group is full of people who all want to drive - bachelor and bachelorette parties are the classic example - this is the only tour where nobody draws the short straw.
Don't Worry If You've Never Ridden
The ATVs are fully automatic - no shifting, no clutch - which is exactly why we can put first-timers on them confidently. Before we roll out, your guide runs a full safety briefing and hands-on riding instruction at the staging area: throttle control, braking, how the machine handles in sand and on rocks. By the time we hit the trail, the basics are second nature, and the guide sets a pace matched to the group's comfort the whole way.
How the Day Runs
You'll meet at our staging area in the Four Peaks area of the Tonto National Forest - an easy drive from Scottsdale or Phoenix, with exact directions arriving with your confirmation. Plan to be there 15 minutes early for check-in and paperwork; helmet, goggles, and bandanna are all provided and fitted before the briefing.
Then the fun part. The route transitions from wide-open desert floor into the technical stuff: sandy washes, rocky climbs, and winding trails through the foothills beneath Four Peaks, with Saguaro cacti lining the way. Midway, the group stops at a scenic overlook to shake out the dust, drink some water, and take in the scale of the Four Peaks wilderness. The return leg uses different trail segments so you see as much of the desert as possible - roughly two hours on the trail in total, with free photos of your daytime tour to take home.
The Practical Stuff
- Price: $199 per ATV, plus a 5% fuel surcharge and 8.1% tax. Groups of 8 or more incur a 15% gratuity.
- Departures: March through May and September at 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM; June through August at 8:00 AM only; October through February at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM.
- Requirements: Drivers must be 16 or older with a valid ID. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory; long pants and sun protection are strongly recommended. Not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with significant back or neck conditions.
- Group minimum: Four guests per departure to operate - but your party doesn't have to meet it, since smaller groups may be combined.
- Transportation: Optional hotel/resort pickup may be available for $35 per person (8-person minimum) or a $280 flat rate.
- Know before you go: There are no restrooms at the trailhead, and cancellations are free up to 72 hours before departure.
What If Some of My Group Doesn't Want to Drive?
Then mix machines. ATVs and UTVs can ride together on the exact same guided tour - the drivers take single-rider ATVs while the riders share a 2-seat or 4-seat UTV (passengers 6+), and everyone stays on one trail.
