The Paddle
This is a 1.5–2 hour paddle on moving water — a gentle but consistent current that keeps things interesting without ever getting rough. As the afternoon heat fades, you'll paddle downstream through golden hour into early twilight, the sky reflecting off the water in shades of amber and violet. Red rock cliffs and volcanic formations catch the last warm light of the day, and the silhouettes of the Superstition Mountains rise in the distance. Standing up gives you the best seat on the river — you can see over the surface, read the water ahead, and take in the desert in every direction.
The Evening Wildlife
Dusk is when the river comes alive. With a little luck, wild horses may appear at the water's edge, and bald eagles and other birds are common along this corridor as they settle in for the evening. Sightings are never guaranteed — these animals are in their natural habitat — but the evening hours are prime time, and your guide will help you spot them as the light fades.
How the Evening Flows
You'll meet your guide at the Canal/Hawes Park & Ride and shuttle to the river launch. After a thorough on-shore safety briefing focused on moving-water technique, you push off into the current and settle into the paddle. Along the way, your guide pauses at a scenic beach — stretch, sip some water, grab a snack, and watch the sky shift from sunset into twilight. By the time you reach the take-out, the Sonoran Desert has settled into its quiet evening rhythm, and the shuttle is waiting to bring you back to your vehicle.

Guide Tips for the Evening
A few things I tell every group before a sunset paddle:
- Look at the horizon, not your feet. On moving water, the board goes where your eyes go — looking ahead keeps your balance and your line clean.
- Water shoes are required. Secure shoes or sport sandals that can get wet and won't fall off — no flip-flops, no bare feet.
- Bring a light layer. The desert cools off once the sun drops, and a light jacket makes the paddle home comfortable.
- Don't skip the sunscreen. The evening sun still reflects off the water.
- Departure times follow the sunset. They shift seasonally — from 3:00–6:00 PM in January and February up to 5:00–8:00 PM in peak summer — so you always catch the best light.
- Bring a waterproof camera if you have one. Dry storage keeps it safe on the water, and golden hour on the river is the kind of scene you'll want to keep.
Who Is This Tour For?
This one's for experienced paddlers — guests who are comfortable on moving water and able to stand and paddle for the duration of the tour. Paddlers must be at least 12 years old and weigh at least 90 lbs. At $156 per person with gear, permits, snacks, and the shuttle all included, it's one of the most memorable evenings you can spend on the water near Phoenix. Private tours are available for an additional $200.
