The Float
This is a relaxing 1.5–2 hour float on calm Class I water — gentle riffles, long calm pools, and your guide doing the steering. As the afternoon heat softens, you drift downstream through golden hour into early twilight, the sky reflecting off the water in shades of amber and violet. Red rock cliffs catch the last warm light of the day, and the silhouettes of the Superstition Mountains rise in the distance.
The Evening Wildlife
Dusk is when the river comes alive. Herons and egrets drift home along the banks, and with a little luck, wild horses may appear at the water's edge — sightings are never guaranteed, but the evening is prime time. Bald eagles and other birds are common along this corridor too, and your guide will help you spot them as the light fades.
How the Evening Flows
You'll meet your guide at the Canal/Hawes Park & Ride and shuttle to the river launch. After a quick on-shore safety briefing, you settle into the raft and push off into calm water. Along the way, your guide pauses at a scenic beach — stretch, sip some water, and watch the sky shift from sunset into twilight. By the time you reach the take-out, the desert has settled into its quiet evening rhythm, and the shuttle is waiting to bring you back.

Guide Tips for the Evening
A few things I tell every group before a sunset float:
- Bring a light layer. The desert cools off once the sun drops — a light jacket makes the float home comfortable.
- Water shoes are required. Secure shoes or sport sandals that can get wet and won't fall off — no flip-flops, no bare feet.
- Don't skip the sunscreen. The evening sun still reflects off the water.
- Activity windows follow the sunset. Meet times shift seasonally — from 3:00–6:00 PM in January and February up to 5:00–8:00 PM in peak summer — so you always catch the best light.
- Bring a waterproof camera if you have one. Golden hour on the river is the kind of scene you'll want to keep.
Who Is This Tour For?
Families, couples, photographers, and anyone who wants the desert at its most beautiful without paddling a stroke — your guide steers while you take it all in. Guests must be at least 5 years old and weigh 35–275 lbs. The tour has a 4-person minimum, but smaller bookings are welcome — we may be able to add you to an existing tour. At $148 per person with gear, permits, snacks, and the shuttle all included, it's one of the most peaceful evenings you can spend near Phoenix.
