What is the Arizona Waterfall & Wet Canyon Adventure?
This is a guided wet canyoneering adventure through waterfalls, pools, and narrow canyon passages in an Arizona slot canyon. You hike, swim, scramble, and rappel with professional guides in a stunning canyon near Payson and Tonto Basin, with approximately 3 to 5 hours of active canyon time.
Where does the tour take place?
In a secluded wet canyon near Payson and Tonto Basin, Arizona, featuring rushing water, polished rock chambers, natural water chutes, and deep sculpted pools. You rendezvous with your guide at a designated staging location in Payson.
Do I need prior canyoneering or climbing experience?
No prior technical rope experience is required — beginners are welcome. Certified guides provide a hands-on safety orientation and rappel technique coaching, and you learn on rope throughout the descent. The most important requirements are the ability to swim unaided in deep water and a willingness to listen closely and follow your guide’s instructions.
THE CANYONEERING EXPERIENCE
What does the day look like?
Your adventure begins when you rendezvous with your guide in Payson. After confirming gear and logistics, you caravan to the trailhead, get fitted with a harness, helmet, wetsuit, and canyon backpack, and receive a safety orientation and rappel coaching. You approach the canyon rim, drop into the drainage system, and negotiate vertical drops on guided waterfall rappels. Inside the corridor you navigate deep swimming sections, scramble over water-carved boulders, and float through quiet stone amphitheaters, pausing on a dry rock shelf for lunch before the final pool swim and exit hike back to the vehicles, where your dry change of clothes is waiting.
How long is the actual tour, and does it include drive time?
The listed duration (approximately 3 to 5 hours) covers active canyon time from rendezvous to release. The exact time spent in the water varies depending on group size and overall group pace. Total transit time for the day depends on your starting point, as driving times from Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Sedona will vary.
REQUIREMENTS
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. All participants must be able to swim unaided in deep, moving water — this tour includes active swimming sections through deep pools.
What is the minimum age?
This tour is suitable for active participants ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
What physical ability do I need?
You need moderate to challenging cardiovascular endurance and mobility over slippery, uneven rock surfaces. Once in the canyon system, the only exit is completing the entire route.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
What’s included?
A professional, certified canyoneering and backcountry guide; all technical gear including ropes, harnesses, helmets, wetsuits, and dedicated canyon backpacks; trail snacks and filtered water refills; a comprehensive safety briefing and hands-on rappel coaching; all required land access, backcountry, and permit fees; and digital tour photos uploaded to our Facebook page when conditions allow guides to safely take them (not guaranteed).
What’s not included?
Transportation — guests are responsible for driving to the rendezvous location in Payson and caravanning to the canyon put-in area. Guide gratuity is optional but always appreciated for exceptional service. Guests may bring trail snacks, but personal items cannot be guaranteed to stay dry in the canyon — we recommend leaving a post-tour lunch in a cooler inside your vehicle. You will also need your own clean, dry change of clothes, towel, and footwear to leave in your vehicle for after the tour.
GEAR & WHAT TO BRING
Are wetsuits provided?
Yes. Wetsuits are included in the provided gear. To ensure proper fit, please provide each participant’s gender, height, weight, and ladies’ dress sizes in the Special Request box during checkout.
What style of footwear is required?
Trail running shoes with aggressive rubber tread offer the best balance of traction on wet rock and support during swims. Heavy hiking boots become waterlogged and are not recommended, and standard water shoes do not provide enough support for the rocky approach and exit hikes unless you pack separate hiking shoes. Smooth-soled sneakers, sandals, and open water booties are strictly prohibited.
What should I wear and bring?
Bring a durable pair of athletic shorts to wear directly over your wetsuit to protect it from abrasive rock, a swimsuit or synthetic athletic layers to wear underneath, 24 to 32 oz of water in a durable leak-proof bottle (filtered refills are provided), sunglasses with a secure retention strap, and a towel with a complete change of dry clothes and shoes to leave in your vehicle for after the descent.
SEASON & MEETING
When is this tour available?
This is a warmer-weather canyon: it runs May through October, meeting at 8:00 AM in Payson, and is not available November through April.
Where do we meet our guide?
You will rendezvous with your guide at a designated staging location in Payson, Arizona, and caravan together to the canyon put-in area. Your lead guide will reach out prior to your tour with exact coordinates, driving instructions, and rendezvous timing.
Will my guide contact me before the tour?
Yes. Your lead guide will reach out prior to your tour date to confirm the exact rendezvous staging area in Payson, morning timing, and current conditions. Please ensure your contact details are accurate at booking.
WEATHER & SAFETY
What happens in the event of inclement weather or flash flood warnings?
Wet canyon safety requires active water flow and weather tracking. 360 Adventures monitors regional storm activity, and our team holds sole discretion for determining whether conditions are safe to enter the canyon. If weather makes the descent unsafe, we will work with you to reschedule or provide a full cancellation.
