This is a strenuous, advanced-only inner-canyon hike. You will descend and ascend 2,000–4,000+ vertical feet over steep, exposed switchbacks. Hikes can exceed 6 miles (9.7 km) one-way with cumulative elevation change comparable to climbing a 40-story building twice. Inner-canyon temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C) May–September. Not recommended for those with heart conditions, knee problems, fear of heights, or insufficient fitness. Prior strenuous hiking experience is required.

Tour Itinerary

Your advanced hiking adventure begins with a pickup from your Flagstaff, Williams, Tusayan, or Grand Canyon Village hotel. We'll drive to a South Rim trail selected at your guide's discretion, where your guide will lead you through a pre-hike safety briefing and gear check before we set out on the trail.

The hike takes you deep into the Grand Canyon, featuring challenging terrain and steep descents into the inner canyon. Along the way, you'll experience the canyon's unique geology, ecology, and history. Your guide will share insights into the area's natural and cultural history.

After completing the hike, we'll head back to the rim. The tour concludes with a comfortable transfer back to your hotel, leaving you with memories of an amazing Grand Canyon adventure.

What's Not Included

What to Bring

  • Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in shoes with good tread (hiking boots or trail shoes); no high heels, dress shoes, or flat-soled shoes.
  • Sun Protection: Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+ sunscreen (small bottle), and lip balm with SPF.
  • Personal Items: Camera and money for souvenirs.
  • Warm-Season Clothing: Light-colored t-shirt, shorts or comfortable pants (jeans not recommended), and a light-colored long-sleeve shirt for sun coverage.
  • Cool-Season Clothing: Warm hat, gloves, layered synthetic clothing (polypro or fleece), thermal underwear, long pants, and a rain jacket or waterproof shell with rain/wind pants.

Season & Departure Times

This tour operates year-round. During summer months (May-September), tours depart at dawn to avoid midday heat. Typical duration is 8+ hours; actual duration varies with the selected route and your group's fitness and pace.

Important Notes

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: Please book in advance to ensure guide availability. Must be in excellent physical condition. Not recommended for those with heart conditions, knee problems, or fear of heights.

Be Prepared: Inner-canyon temperatures from May through September regularly exceed 100°F (38°C). Grand Canyon trails are steep and rugged, and climbs back to the South Rim reach elevations of up to 7,400 feet, where oxygen is more scarce. We strongly recommend training with regular prep hikes that include significant elevation change in the weeks before your tour, and checking with your healthcare provider first if you have any chronic health conditions.
