Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Rides in Phoenix

Camelback Mountain, Downtown Phoenix, and the wide Sonoran Desert basin come into view as the balloon rises into the morning light. This 45–60 minute sunrise flight begins at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, transitioning from the excitement of inflation into a quiet drift across the valley with professional pilot narration and a post-flight champagne toast and continental breakfast.

  • Duration: Approximately 60 minutes in the air; about 3 hours total experience time.
  • Departure: Phoenix Deer Valley Airport; launch sites vary based on wind conditions.
  • Destination: The Sonoran Desert basin north of Phoenix.
  • Bonus: Aerial views of Camelback Mountain, Lake Pleasant, and the Phoenix skyline.
  • Tour Style: Shared sunrise balloon flight with interpretive pilot narration.

The thing we love about these flights is the absolute silence (except when the pilot is using the burner system. You soar over wildlife and they don't even know you're there.

Tour Highlights

  • Sunrise Desert Light: Catch the long morning shadows that define mountain ridges and cactus flats.
  • Basin-and-Range Geology: Observe the unique landscape of fault-bounded mountains and broad desert basins from an aerial perspective.
  • Sonoran Flora: Identify the signature "two-rain" vegetation, including Saguaro, Palo Verde, and Ironwood trees.
  • Wind-Driven Routes: Experience a unique flight path every time, as the pilot navigates the day's specific air currents.
  • Insider Payoff: Watch the "green ribbons"—washes where extra moisture supports the desert's most active wildlife at dawn.
  • Photography Tip: Capture the best scale during pre-flight inflation, then use post-sunrise side light to silhouette saguaros against the desert floor’s textures and washes.

Tour Itinerary

The morning begins at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, where you'll meet your flight crew and shuttle to the day's specific launch field. This is a prime window for photography; you'll stand alongside the baskets as the burners roar to life and the massive envelopes take shape. Before boarding, watch as the pilots launch a "pibal" (pilot balloon)—a small helium balloon used to visually track the complex air currents and layers of the Sonoran atmosphere.

Once airborne, the pilot adjusts your elevation to find the best mix of panoramic views and low-level desert skimming. The experience concludes with the landing—which ranges from a gentle upright touch-down to a spirited "basket-on-its-side" arrival, depending on the surface winds. While the crew handles the pack-out, you'll enjoy a champagne toast and a healthy continental breakfast in the heart of the desert before shuttling back to the airport.
