When people think of Arizona, they typically think of the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and Sedona or Scottsdale. Yes, those are some must-see places, but there are other amazing, and less visited spots. So, when we asked a native Arizonan, these are the top 3 road trips he came up with. Number 3 is something you, or AI for that matter, wouldn't come up with.
Route 1: Phoenix to Grand Canyon - https://maps.app.goo.gl/pyZu6369xXxU7vjr6
This is an iconic departure & destination because it departs from a major metropolitan city and goes to the Crown Jewel of the Natural Wonders of the World. However, the route I’m suggesting is a little different from the norm. Depart from Phoenix and travel north on I-17 making sure to empty your bladder and fill your gas tank because delays are common. Once you get to Flagstaff (which is a worthy stop in itself, take US-89 instead of US-180. This will take you through the southern portion of the Navajo Nation (see suggested stop below). This route will take visitors into the Grand Canyon from the eastern gate, which is far less busy.
This is a great trip for families because it affords stops at some iconic locations, and varied terrain providing an “Iconic Arizona” experience. Overnights in Cottonwood or Flagstaff provide for a more relaxed itinerary.
Key locations to visit along the way:
Is this a road trip for cars only? RVs only? Both? Both (very RV-friendly with plentiful overnight options en route and near the park)
Route 2: Tucson to Page - https://maps.app.goo.gl/4zYnbPCb1WznRgg49
If families really want to see the “entire state” then this drive is a must. Starting in Tucson, home to the best Mexican food on the planet – you’re wrong if you think otherwise – families will get to experience “The Old Pueblo”. As you drive north, you’ll see the iconic Saguaro Cactus and have opportunities to visit historical locations (see stops below). After leaving Tucson you’ll head toward Phoenix, but you’ll get off the I-17 and head to Payson along a scenic route with views of the type of terrain that answers the question “how did the Indians hide so well?” From Payson you can travel to Sedona for a Red Rock visit, then on to Flagstaff. Then, your next destination is Page, Arizona and Antelope Canyon & Lake Powell. This is a true immersive route for families who want an educational experience without it feeling like school.
Key places to visit along the way (in addition to the options in Route 1).
Is this a road trip for cars only? RVs only? Both? Both There are RV parks & stops along the way, but make sure to plan ahead for RVs
Route 3: Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (Tucson – Flagstaff) - https://maps.app.goo.gl/U9juMAh3yBjnowMf6
The Coronado Scenic Byway (U.S. 191) is a 120-mile Arizona route tracing the 1540 journey of Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado searching for the "Seven Cities of Cibola". This route is perfect for families looking for a dramatic scenery change and a true “road trip”. We highly suggest this be broken into 2-3 days, so the drive isn’t rushed. The drive starts in Tucson and traverses parts of Southern Arizona, eventually heading north through some less traveled routes, including high-elevation forests, sweeping vistas, small mountain towns and plenty of opportunities for picnic stops along the way.
Key places to visit along the way (Route 1 & 2 stops can be added on an extended trip).
Is this a road trip for cars only? RVs only? Both? While this route is suitable for cars, we suggest that only small RV’s tackle this route. Drivers uncomfortable with curvy, narrow roads and sustained mountain switchbacks should prepare for this.
