WHAT TO WEAR & BRING

What should I wear on the tour?
Closed-toe shoes are recommended and considered essential for safety. Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting dusty. Layers are a good idea during the cooler months, as desert temperatures can swing significantly between morning and afternoon.

What should I bring?
Sunscreen and a camera are recommended. A hat or bandana can help with sun protection and dust. If you wear contact lenses, consider bringing sunglasses or goggles to keep dust out of your eyes. Leave valuables at your hotel when possible.

Are helmets provided?
Yes. Helmets are provided and are required for all participants. They will be fitted during your check-in and gear-up session before the ride.

WEATHER & DESERT CONDITIONS

What is the weather like in the Scottsdale desert?
Scottsdale sits in the Sonoran Desert at roughly 1,200–1,500 feet elevation. Winter highs typically range from the mid-60s to mid-70s °F, spring and fall see highs in the 80s–90s °F, and summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 °F. Daily temperature swings of 25–30 °F are common, so mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler.

What is the best time of year to take this tour?
Fall through spring (October–April) offers the most comfortable riding conditions with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Spring is particularly scenic when desert wildflowers may be in bloom. Summer tours are limited to early morning hours to avoid extreme heat.

Does the tour run in the rain?
Most desert off-road operators run tours rain or shine, as brief rain showers are common during Arizona’s monsoon season (July–September). Rain can actually enhance the experience by settling dust and revealing desert colors. Contact 360 Adventures directly if you have concerns about weather on your tour date.

How important is staying hydrated?
Extremely important. The Sonoran Desert’s dry heat causes rapid dehydration, often before you feel thirsty. Water is provided on the tour, but visitors should also drink plenty of water before arriving. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption the night before, as it accelerates dehydration in arid conditions.

DESERT ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

What wildlife might I see during the tour?
The Sonoran Desert is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Visitors commonly spot jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, roadrunners, coyotes, and various lizard species. You may also see javelinas, Gila woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks, and occasionally desert tortoises. Rattlesnakes and Gila monsters are present but rarely encountered on the trails.

What kind of plants and scenery will I see?
The Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world where the iconic saguaro cactus grows. You will also see palo verde trees, cholla cactus, creosote bushes, mesquite, and barrel cactus. The landscape features dramatic canyon walls, sandy washes, and sweeping desert vistas backed by mountain ranges.

PRACTICAL & LOGISTICS

Is there cell phone service on the trail?
Cell service in the desert can be spotty to nonexistent depending on your carrier and the specific trail location. Do not rely on your phone for navigation or communication while on the tour. Your guide is equipped to handle any situations that arise.

Are there restrooms on the trail?
There are typically no restroom facilities on desert trails. Plan accordingly and use facilities before arriving at the meeting point. The open desert is the only option during the ride.

Can I take photos during the tour?
Absolutely. Your guide will make stops along the route for photos, water, and breaks. A camera or smartphone is recommended. Renting a GoPro ($30) is a convenient option for capturing video while keeping your hands on the wheel.

How far is the trailhead from Scottsdale hotels?
Most Sonoran Desert trailheads used by tour operators are approximately 30 to 45 minutes from hotels and resorts in the greater Scottsdale and Phoenix area. Exact directions will be included in your booking confirmation.
